MagID

MagID is a patented technology that sits right between RFID and visual barcodes. MagID stands for Magnetic IDentity. It uses magnetic barcodes, which can be read through materials. They can be printed inside packaging, or under labels, or be printed over.

How to create

MagID codes can be printed using widely available non-toxic materials, so it is cost effective at scale and can be created anywhere. MagID codes do not include antennae or chips, so are environmentally sustainable, both at production and at end-of-life. MagID codes can be covered or embedded, therefore do not interfere with branding and are protected from dirt, cleaning, scratches. This also means that MagID codes will last many decades and remain readable!

How to manage

MagID codes can be used in our VaaS (Verification-as-a-Service) platform, see below.

Verification-as-a-Service

A secure and flexible track&trace platform to manage your track&trace
functionalities, and keep track of items during their life cycle.

What is it
a secure and flexible track&trace platform to manage marked items. We offer a fully-serviced option, but also the possibility to manage it yourself. Every client can run their own applications, on their own servers, allowing full security and GDPR compliance. Upon scanning the data log is updated, which can be accessed anywhere in the supply chain, to know where an item came from, where it was destined and used for, etc.
Who for

Anybody. Whether you are an SME wanting to be able to trace your products in your markets, or a secure printer wanting to offer highly secure certificates, or a label manufacturer wanting to offer cost-effective covertly marked and traceable labels, our VaaS platform will make it easy for you.

Who for

We use marks that suit your products and industry. The platform is trigger-agnostic, so you can use optical codes, for example 1D or 2D barcodes; but you can also use RFID / NFC tags; or MagID codes. For anti-counterfeit measures a combination of marking technologies is far more secure. Contact us to discuss your challenges. Here

FAQs

How does MagID work?

MagID uses ink or toners that contain magnetisable particles. These inks/toners are readily available and non-toxic, and can be found, for example, at the bottom of bank cheques, showing the account number and sort code.

If you print barcodes with such magnetisable ink you don’t need direct line-of-sight in order to detect the barcode pattern. However, you do need special sensors to detect it if the pattern is covered up, e.g. by paper, paint, holograms.

MagVision have developed a simple handheld pen-reader to scan a MagID barcode through any non-ferrous covering material. The pen reader communicates to a cloud-based database to verify the unique code and associated information.

Is MagID difficult to implement?

No, it is not difficult to implement MagID. MagVision can very quickly establish what is needed for you to use the MagID technology. Just contact us via the Contact Form, or email or call us.

Does MagID require special printers?

MagID codes can be printed with any press that can use standard MICR ink, or has MICR spot capability. It can also be printed by certain laser printers, using their standard toners.

Contact us to find out whether your presses can print MagID codes.

Can MagID codes go into microwave ovens?

Yes, items with MagID codes can be put into microwave ovens many times without compromising the MagID codes. The iron content in the ink is so low that the codes don’t over-heat, nor do they damage the microwave.

Who uses MagID codes?

First users are security printers who have MICR capabilities. But MagID can equally easy be used by packaging printers to add low-cost authentication or tag&trace features.

Is MagID expensive?

No, costs per individual code are fractions of cents, but depend on the volumes of codes you require.

Is MagID secure?

Yes, MagID is a secure technology. The platform that manages the codes is highly robust, each customer having its own server and own applications running on them. This means that potential issues with one customer will not compromise another customer’s service. The code structure has been developed by MagVision, and although individual codes can in theory be copied (just like 1D or 2D visual barcodes can be copied), any scanning of copied codes will show up in the tag&trace platform.

Does MagVision only offer MagID technology for Tag & Trace?

No, we also use QR codes and RFID/NFC tags to uniquely mark items for tag&trace. Our backend system is ‘trigger agnostic’ – we are happy to integrate any technology you would like to trace.
